33 First in Taiping

1) Taiping Town - 1874

Based subject to article XII of the Pangkor Engagement Commissioners report on boundary settlement and the  establishment of taiping and Kamunting boundaries.  Later followed by the laying out of the Taiping town four months later by Assistant Resident Captain Speedy.

 

2) Assistant Resident Residency PWD 1( now know as PWD 2 ) - 1875

This bungalow originally the Assistant Resident Residency, occupied by Captain Speedy.  Completed early 1875 on a hill-lock as "Bukit Jelutong" overlooking Taiping Town.

 

3) Matang Headman Hall - Balai Penghulu  - 1875

A notable " Balai Penghulu " once served as early administrative office and court of Penghulu, although have undergone additions and after altrations.

4) Roman Catholic Church - 1875

Founded immediately a year after the British intervention by the Catholic missionary.  A simple timber structure in 1875.  New church building completed in 1884.

 

5) Esplanade  - 1875

The "Padang"  or "plain" also known as the " Esplanade " was the first established in 1875 in accordance with the town established.  Rebuilt later in 1881 after the great fire of 1880.

 

6) Post Office - 1877

A small post office, fist established in 1877, occupied part of PWD 102.Later occupied part of 103 in 1884.

 

7) Telegraph Office - 1877

First mentioned by Hugh Low April 1877 as a small timber structure near the Fort at Matang.  Start rebuilt in 1884 and the first modern Post and Telegraph office of brick completed in 1885 at Station Road.

8) Gaol - 1879

The Mantri's house at Matang (Laroot) was the earlier gaol since 1877.  Two years later relocate at present site and known as Taiping Prison. Rebuilt again in sages from 1884 -1997

 

9) British Mess - 1879

Situated  inside the Cantonment at Barrack Square, Class V-PWD No. 17, later rebuilt new at present site bearing PWD No. 7, at New Cub Road. It was built not earlier than 1906 as British Officer's Mess.

 

10) Maxwell Hill - 1879

First Indian-style hill station started in 1879 and by 1889, sufficient accommodation for several officers had been built. The hill was constructed in stages from l884 -1905.

 

11) Rest House - 1879

Built and established in 1879 and later all over the state. Initially it was a simple timber structure as accommodation for Perak Government staff and visitors. Rebuilt at the same site PWD 101, in 1894 and the words REST HOUSE are embossed on front facade and it was known as Town Rest House.

 

12) Barrack - 1879

The first Cantonment built for the para-military in the Malay State. Initially, a single barrack in 1873 under Captain Speedy in Larut. Two Barracks erected at same site and completed of timber frame work and brick pillar in 1879 and further enlargement of cantonment in 1904.

 

13) Public Office - 1881

The first public office built on raised pillars and planks in 1881 and further additions made in 1885 and subsequently in the 1890’s to accommodate various government departments was demolished in 1985. A new public office commenced in 1895 and completed in 1897, now known as Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah Larut Matang Selama still stand.

 

14) Clock Tower( Town Police Station) -1881

Dubbed the "old Clock Tower", initially built as the town Police Station first as a single storey timber structure in 1881 and rebuilt largely of brick known in those days as the "Fort" In 1890 and completed in 1891.

 

15 ) Central Police Station  - 1881

A two storey building at the junction of Old Club Road / Main Road adjacent to Barrack and Public Office is of significant architectural style - of brick and wood, corrugated iron roof was commenced in 1881 and only occupied In 1882 with a watch tower.

 

16) General Hospital -1881

The first Government Hospital in the Malay States was started in 1878 for prisoners and for the public in 1881. It was rebuilt new in 1881 and removal of this establishment to a new site, opposite the Yeng Wah Hospital.

 

17) Anglican Church -1883

Established since 1883 as the oldest and most venerated timber constructed Anglican Church in the Malay Peninsula. It was rebuilt in mid 1886 and completed in 1887

 

18) Market - 1884

Best preserved model of 19th century market building and comprises the first market, a wet market completed m 1884 at Main Road and the second (1885) a dry market along Kota Road, situated within the Market Square, each one of timber post and truss structure.

 

19) Lake Garden - 1884

The Lake and Gardens served as an ornamental park since1884. Developed in stages and it is a combined work beginning with Hugh Low, W.R Scott, Col Walker, Frank Swettenham, Constance Sydney Holmes, A R Venning, R Deny and others

 

20) Railway - 1885

 Constructed by manual labour from 1883 between Port Weld and Taiping, 8 1/4 miles long to transport tin and other bulk commodities and is first opened to public on 1st Jun 1885.

 

21) Port (port well)- 1885

Lies on the Perak Coast at the mouth of Sungai Sepetang and is better known as "railway" sea port for Taiping, Kamunting and Larut, the leading mining district of Malaya. Its construction was associated with the building of the first railway In Malaya.

 

22) Perak Railway Building - 1885

A combination of old and new Railway Building PWD 267 & PWD 269, the earlier built 1885 and 1893 situated at the junction of Cross Street No. 4 and Cross Street No. 5.

 

23) Museum - 1886

A "piece of art" constructed in Victorian style in 1883 and It Is a particularly elegant example of early British Colonial architecture. Perak Museum, PWD 268 was rebuilt in 3 years (1883-1886) and completed toward end of 1886.

 

24) Golf - 1886

The first Golf course in the Malay States established in 1886. Relinquished to Bukit Jana Golf Cub, Kamunting in 1988 and in 1894, New Cub has taken over the affair of the Golf Club.

 

25) Kwangtung Association - 1887

First Club or Association for the Chinese established in the Malay States, established in 1887. It was the intention to erect a substantial and ornamental building at the junction of Temple Street and Kota Road.

26) Chartered Bank - 1888渣打銀行

Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China was established in Taiping, on 15th November 1888. PWD 264 located at the junction of Kota Road and Esplanade Road was specially built to house the Bank in 1907.

27) Government Girls' School (SMK Treacher Methodist) - 1889女英校

First girl’s school was established by the Perak Government in 1889 and known as Government Girl's School. The school re-opened in 1891 and its first extension was in 1895 and subsequently in 1895.

28) Ceylon Association - 1899錫蘭協會

 First Association for the Ceylonese established in the Malay States in 1899. Established as the "Little Jaffna " centre for social, intellectual, religious and sports activities.

29) Topo and Survey Office (PWD 105) - 1891土地測量局

 The Topo and Survey Office occupied PWD 105 at Station Road immediately after completion of the construction in June 1891, under the leadership of Chief Surveyor Mr. G Lefroy. Earlier the Topo and Survey Office was under the Department of Public Works since 1877-1888

30) Indian Association of The F.M.S - 1906印人公會

It was known as “The Indian Association of the F.M.S." established in 1906, later rebuilt new in 1925. It was formed for the purpose of promoting the intellectual, social and moral welfare of the Indian community.

 

31) Aerodrome - 1930太平德卡飛機場

Preparation of the landing ground for aero planes in Taiping, commenced in 1930 and completed during the year. Extension of the landing ground take place later in 1938.

32) War Cemetery - 1947英軍紀念碑

Since 1947, Taiping War Cemetery considered among the most prominent war cemeteries in Malaya.

33). Night Safari - 2003夜間動物院

E​stablished in 2001 as the first Night Safari in Malaysia.
