Taiping derives its name from Chinese, Tai-Peng which means Everlasting Peace. In its early years, Taiping was one of the tin mining capitals of the world. Unlike other mining towns, Taiping evolved into a place where scenic beauty and urban charm came together so harmoniously that it has the appearance of a natural paradise.

    Taiping has always been a place of many firsts. As the oldest city on the former Federated Malay States, it is the starting point of British intervention in the administration of Malay States. Besides being the first mining center, Taiping’s impressive list includes the first railway, the first telegraph office, the first specifically designed museum building, and the first fire brigade, to name but a few.

    In December 2018, Taiping was listed as among 100 Sustainable Cities by Green Destinations which was a list made to recognise the contribution of the authorities towards creating a more sustainable environment. Also, Taiping has been recognised as among the TOP THREE SUSTAINABLE CITY IN THE WORLD, according to the 2019 Sustainable Top 100 Destination Awards.
