Taiping another addition to beautifying the landscape of Taiping town is the Perak Botanical Gardens. Taiping Botanical Garden was completed in November 2019, it consists of more than 10,000 plants and 120 species. Also, it consists of four themed areas which are Palmatum garden, Perak Malay garden, northern zone endemic garden and a theme park over 5.7 h.a area. These 22.6 ha gardens are located near the Taiping Lake Gardens and are a collaboration between Taiping Municipal Council and the National Landscape Department. The original site used to be a tin mine and then converted to a golf course, the first one in Malaya during 1885. One of the attractions proposed for this garden is the planting of trees with historical values significant to Perak and other states. The main function of this garden would be for conservation, research and education purposes. Other than that, it will also be developed for other aspects such as heritage, culture, recreation as well as tourism.
First of all, the Palmatum garden has been planted with various palm and cycad trees. They include the Roystonea regia, Cycas rumphii, Licuala grandis, Beintinckia nicobarica, Livistonia rotundifolia, and Ravenala Madagascariensis. The Perak Malay garden has plants like Antiaris toxicaria (Ipoh tree), Hibiscus floccosus (Kangsar), Garcinia hombroniana (Beruas) and Alstonia scholaris (Pulai). The northern zone endemic garden has plant species found in Perak, Penang, Kedah, and Perlis. These include Maingaya Malaya (witch hazel), Durio pinangianus (durian), Johanesteijsmannia perakensis (Daun Payung Perak) and Cycas clivicola (Bogak). The garden is said to be only the fourth in the world to have the Maingaya Malaya.
